Design of a modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for archaeological investigations

2015

MARTA (MARine Tool for Archaeology) is a modular AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) designed and developed by the University of Florence in the framework of the ARROWS (ARchaeological RObot systems for the World's Seas) FP7 European project. The ARROWS project challenge is to provide the underwater archaeologists with technological tools for cost affordable campaigns: i.e. ARROWS adapts and develops low cost AUV technologies to significantly reduce the cost of archaeological operations, covering the full extent of an archaeological campaign (underwater mapping, diagnosis and cleaning tasks). The tools and methodologies developed within ARROWS comply with the "Annex" of the 2001 UNESCO Conv…

Comparative morphology of the postpharyngeal gland in the Philanthinae (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) and the evolution of an antimicrobial brood protect…

2015

Background Hymenoptera that mass-provision their offspring have evolved elaborate antimicrobial strategies to ward off fungal infestation of the highly nutritive larval food. Females of the Afro-European Philanthus triangulum and the South American Trachypus elongatus (Crabronidae, Philanthinae) embalm their prey, paralyzed bees, with a secretion from a complex postpharyngeal gland (PPG). This coating consists of mainly unsaturated hydrocarbons and reduces water accumulation on the prey’s surface, thus rendering it unfavorable for fungal growth. Here we (1) investigated whether a North American Philanthus species also employs prey embalming and (2) assessed the occurrence and morphology of …

2022

The church of the Badia Nuova in Palermo, which arose in the 16th century and subjected to continuous renovations, stands out as an isolated case in the Palermo scene for its ingenious double-shell dome solution in the presbytery area. The aim of the research is to analyse the architectural design for a comprehension of the relationships between light and space.

Use of new technique of image based aimed to perspective return

2014

The diffusion of Image-based 3D modeling techniques, through image-based free, low cost and open source software, have increased drastically in the past few years, especially in Cultural Heritage domain (Architecture, Archeology, Urban planning) [2, 3]. Computer vision techniques use photographs from dataset collection to rapidly build detailed 3D models. The simultaneous applications of different algorithms (MVS), the different techniques of image matching, feature extracting and mesh optimization are inside an active field of research in computer vision. Computer vision techniques - Structure from Motion (SfM)- allow to fulfill detailed 3D models from photos dataset collections. The resul…

2022

The contribution presented here is part of a work-in-progress project, which has as its focus the “extra-moenia” urban transformations suffered by the city of Palermo after World War II, with the aim of cataloging, reconstructing and restoring the remarkable heritage -lost in the years of the economic boom and building speculation- in three-dimensional virtual images. The analysis is part of the urban context affected by the extension of via Libertà starting from the intersection with via Notarbartolo, the transversal directional axis conceived in the Giarrusso Plan of 1887 as a connection to the Shipyards and built starting from the subdivisions of Villa Carini in the years 1891-1902. Architettura e Informatica.

2016

This paper illustrates the pursuance of the studies, focused on the initial phases of the Flavian Temple in Leptis, until 2014. The reconstructive hypothesis by the arch. Paolo Mighetto, based on the old and new archaeological data as result of excavations and researches in recent years, allow to publish the first 3d virtual rendering of the Roman Complex, made by Dr. Massimo Limoncelli, member of the Italian-Libian Archaeological Mission

BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE: RECONSTRUCTION AND PRESENTATION OF LOST SITES AND BUILDINGS

2021

Abstract. The paper presents the results of a research aiming at proving the efficacy of perspective restitution from photos for the reconstruction of buildings and sites that disappeared in the past century. The case study is the town of Messina, sited at the north-eastern corner of Sicily (Italy), facing the homonymous strait that divides Sicily from the Italian peninsula; in 1908 Messina and Reggio Calabria, at the opposite side of the strait, were levelled to the ground by a powerful earthquake, followed by a tsunami. No building or monument survived the destruction: a new town with the same name took the site of Messina. Except for few strongly reshaped buildings, the memory of the stre…

Applications and development of acoustic and microwave atomic force microscopy for high resolution tomography analysis

2016

The atomic force microscope (AFM) is a powerful tool for the characterization of organic and inorganic materials of interest in physics, biology and metallurgy. However, conventional scanning probe microscopy techniques are limited to the probing surface properties, while the subsurface analysis remains difficult beyond nanoindentation methods. Thus, the present thesis is focused on two novel complementary scanning probe techniques for high-resolution volumetric investigation that were develop to tackle this persisting challenge in nanometrology. The first technique considered, called Mode Synthesizing Atomic Force Microscopy (MSAFM), has been exploited in collaboration with Dr. Laurene Teta…

2020

Starting from the survey of the remains of Termini Imerese Roman Amphitheater and considering both its virtual reconfiguration and the architectural events that have seen the succession of different urban stratifications and re-significations, we have concentrated our interest on the cases that have determined the changes in shape and the archaeological sedimentations of some amphitheatres in Italy and Europe. From these preliminary operations the investigation work was carried out on Palermo, wanting to verify - through the survey and the redrawing of the urban fabric - the compatibility of the most recent hypotheses of location of the buildings for spectacles in the Panormus of the Roman …
